Features: Shipwreck Point causeway, gold & jade searches on the beaches, Jade Carvers. Rainforest Rail Trail, 3 x swing bridges, 1860’s Theatre Royal Hotel, Kumara Gold Heritage Town, Alpine Lakes, Wetlands Boardwalk, Cowboy Paradise, Hokitika Tourist Town, Kaniere Rail Line Cycle Path, water race cycle path, Lake Kaniere, some great downhill riding too.

Day 1 Ross to Hokitika: 33km (4-5 hrs. Km posts 132>99)

After your Shuttle to the Ross Goldfields Information Centre you follow the orange arrows through town and then towards the coast.

You’ll then cross the old wooden trestle rail bridge to get onto the rail trail from Ross to Ruatapu. This rail trail crosses the outlets of some interesting wetlands and coastal lagoons so look out for the bird life in this area. You’ll also cross eleven smaller bridges too.

You then continue on, to the Treetops Walkway which is worth a stop. It also has a Café where you can have lunch. Between here and Hokitika you'll ride the old Mananui Bush ail Line, a wetlands board walk and another wooden truss bridge.

Day 2 Hokitika to Kaniere/Milltown: 30km (4-5 hrs. Km posts 99>70)

Following the Hokitika River, from Hokitika township, the Jade capital of New Zealand, you'll be riding the old Kaniere Rail Line to the Kaniere Village. From here the cycle trail follows a sealed back country road and then into a really nice rainforest section up to Lake Kaniere. Depending on where you are staying for the night some riders stay at the Lake while others continue to Cowboy Paradise.

Day 3 Kaniere/Milltown to Kumara: 40 km / 6-7 hrs. Km Posts 70>30

Depending on how much riding you'd like to do we can drop you off a Lake Kaniere to start your ride or further along the trail to the Milltown area in the Arahura Valley. Stop for a visit at Cowboy Paradise where you can get a coffee. This is set up as a wild west town with a wonderful Saloon.

You'll then pass over an amazing swing bridge (its quite sturdy) and make your way up a short climb to the top of Kawhaka Pass. Then its a long, great fun, downhill ride through stunning rainforest.

You then follow a number of bush rail trails from the logging days in the 1800's through rainforest, by alpine streams and past mirror-like lakes with amazing mountain reflections if you are there on a still day. The cycle path takes you across the Old Christchurch Road and follows a canal with great trout fishing too. This valley has beautiful view points and will remind you of the New Zealand forests from Lord of The Rings with there ancient moss covered trees.

Your ride finishes on arrival at Kumara.  We recommend a visit to the Theatre Royal Hotel, a refurbished 1860's Goldrush Hotel.

Let us know if you need a Shuttle back to Greymouth at the end of your ride. The cost for this is not included in the Packaged Ride pricing.

Finish your ride with a Hot Spa and a glass of wine at the Cycle Trail Outfitters Base in Greymouth. We also have showers and changing rooms and luggage storage (free with bike rentals)

Frequently asked questions....

What accommodation is there?

There is a wide range of accommodation and you can view a selection in the SLEEP tab of the home page. Packages are priced at 3 levels of accommodation. All bedding and linen is supplied at all 3 levels.

Affordable: Clean and comfortable staying in shared single sex rooms such as a hostel. Its a great way to save money and meet other cyclists and travellers. All facilities are shared.

Standard: You'll have your own bedroom and often your own bathroom but not always. In some places along the trail packages may use hosted home stays  as the hosts and the location are special. In this case you'll share bathroom facilities with the hosts. They have kitchens or there are nearby eating places.

Superior: Treat yourself to some additional luxury. You'll have an ensuite bathroom and a larger bedroom too.

What happens to my bags?

We can move your bags for you each day so that they are at your accommodation when you get there. On the Trip Planning form you can indicate how many bags you want shuttled.

Do I need a shuttle on the trail?

We recommend that you stay the night before your ride in Greymouth and then start your ride the next morning in Ross as it is a lot easier cycling in this direction. We will shuttle you and your bike to Ross departing Greymouth at 8am on Day 1 of your ride. We will also drop off your luggage in Hokitika on the way. This also means that on the last day you dont need to hurry to the end to catch a shuttle back and you can also get to have a Hot Spa and glass of wine on us when you come off the trail back in Greymouth at the Cycle Trail Outfitters base. (its a great way to finish!)

What do I get if I purchase a Package with you for my cycle ride?

Packages include everything except meals. We provide you with a list of meal places along the trail. This enables you to try a range of delicious meals from a wide variety of restaurants and cafes or some people like to self cater too. Packages include bikes that are designed for the trail but you are welcome to bring your own.

How do I get to the Greymouth?

The TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch is a great way to start your holiday and we can arrange this for you. There is also the West Coast Shuttle from Christchurch too. If you are driving from Christchurch it is about a 3 hour drive if you dont stop,

Some people fly into the Hokitika Airport where they have a shuttle to Greymouth which takes 25 minutes.

There are also Intercity coaches from both Nelson and Queenstown.
