Features: Shipwreck Point causeway, gold & jade searches on the beaches, Jade Carvers, Coastal Cycle Path, Rainforest Rail Trail, swing bridge, 1860’s Theatre Royal Hotel, Kumara Gold Heritage Town

The trail is flat all the way and starts by following the old coal rail line to the wharf loading bays and their cranes, two monsters used for loading coal into ships. It then follows the flood wall around the fishing basin to the coast. Make sure you pedal out onto the Shipwreck Point Causeway which is a solid pier going out beyond the breakers giving some stunning views along the coast and to the Southern Alps with Mount Cook. It is also a great fishing spot. Ask us about what lures to use or we can hire you a fishing rod.

The cycle trail then follows the old Coastal Timber Rail line running along the dunes just inside the West Coasts Gold bearing black sand beaches. This really is New Zealand’s Gold Coast. Bring a gold pan and you might strike it rich because there are plenty of people who are!

You'll cycle past the Stone Pub along to the Taramakau River Bridge which gives some great views of the coast and estuary. This area is known for its Blue Penguins which can sometimes be seen here in the winter.

Then its along the old Kumara Rail line through rainforest and across a gold miners gorge on a swing bridge about 15 minutes before Kumara. At the Village of Kumara visit the 1860"s Theatre Royal Hotel restored to its former glory where yo can also have lunch or go to then local cafe that does a great coffee and take-aways.  There is also an interesting Heritage trail through the village too.

Your Overnight Ride can either include you riding back to Greymouth the same way or catching the Shuttle back to Greymouth. If you are catching the Shuttle you'll have time to ride further along the trail to the Alpine Lakes for some stunning views of the Southern Alps and then back to Kumara for your Shuttle pickup.

Your accommodation is standard grade 3 Star with ensuite bathroom. If you are a group then there maybe a house for you.

Frequently asked questions....

What accommodation is there?

There is a wide range of accommodation and you can view a selection in the SLEEP tab of the home page. Packages are priced at 3 levels of accommodation. All bedding and linen is supplied at all 3 levels.

Affordable: Clean and comfortable staying in shared single sex rooms such as a hostel. Its a great way to save money and meet other cyclists and travellers. All facilities are shared.

Standard: You'll have your own bedroom and often your own bathroom but not always. In some places along the trail packages may use hosted home stays  as the hosts and the location are special. In this case you'll share bathroom facilities with the hosts. They have kitchens or there are nearby eating places.

Superior: Treat yourself to some additional luxury. You'll have an ensuite bathroom and a larger bedroom too.

What happens to my bags?

We can move your bags for you each day so that they are at your accommodation when you get there. On the Trip Planning form you can indicate how many bags you want shuttled.

Do I need a shuttle on the trail?

We recommend that you stay the night before your ride in Greymouth and then start your ride the next morning in Ross as it is a lot easier cycling in this direction. We will shuttle you and your bike to Ross departing Greymouth at 8am on Day 1 of your ride. We will also drop off your luggage in Hokitika on the way. This also means that on the last day you dont need to hurry to the end to catch a shuttle back and you can also get to have a Hot Spa and glass of wine on us when you come off the trail back in Greymouth at the Cycle Trail Outfitters base. (its a great way to finish!)

What do I get if I purchase a Package with you for my cycle ride?

Packages include everything except meals. We provide you with a list of meal places along the trail. This enables you to try a range of delicious meals from a wide variety of restaurants and cafes or some people like to self cater too. Packages include bikes that are designed for the trail but you are welcome to bring your own.

How do I get to the Greymouth?

The TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch is a great way to start your holiday and we can arrange this for you. There is also the West Coast Shuttle from Christchurch too. If you are driving from Christchurch it is about a 3 hour drive if you dont stop,

Some people fly into the Hokitika Airport where they have a shuttle to Greymouth which takes 25 minutes.

There are also Intercity coaches from both Nelson and Queenstown.
