West Coast Rail Trail

Wilderness Ride 1 Day

About this Ride

Kumara to Kawhaka Pass 27 kms-8hrs return

Km Posts 29>39: Kumara to Lakes Boardwalk 10km-1hr

Km Posts 39>49: Boardwalk to Intake 10km-1hr

Km Posts 49>56: Intake to top of Pass 7km-2hr

Features: Alpine Mirror Lakes, rainforest ferns and mosses, birdlife, wetlands board walk, canal, suspension bridge

This ride has 2 longish rises that can take it out of you plus there is lots to stop and see along the way to view many natural features, This means that in the 4 hours  we suggest here for the ride up to the top of the Pass you may not have reached the top so you'll need to turn around after about 4 and a half hours to get back within the eight hours suggested here.  The return ride is mainly downhill so it wont take you as long to ride back.

For fitter riders you might like to go over the Pass and down the other side to have a look at the impressive swing bridge.

For riders that are more into enjoying the outdoors and electric bike is a fun and easy option for this beaustiful but more challenging ride.

This rail trail section follows a number of old bush tram railways through rainforest, by alpine streams and past mirror-like lakes with amazing mountain reflections if you are there on a still day. The board walk through the wetlands section gives great photos and is a good place for a rest. The cycle path takes you across the Old Christchurch Road and follows a canal with great trout fishing too.

If you are renting bikes in Greymouth you will need a shuttle to and from the start of this ride at Kumara.
