Speights Alehouse

It’s completely appropriate that the Speight’s Alehouse in Greymouth can be found on Mawhera Quay. Mawhera is a Maori name meaning “bright running waters, obviously originally referring to the mighty Grey River flowing past the Quay. But today the name could be easily describing the selection of award winning Speight’s Ales available on tap in the Alehouse. The Alehouse is built into an impressive solid brick building that has stood staunchly on the quay. It needed to be strong too because the Grey River has a mind of its own and occasionally bursts it’s floodbank sending torrents of the normally wellmannered ‘bright running water’ down river and flooding the Quay. There have been times when the entire lower bottom floor has been underwater. A total renovation of the building was carried out in 2006 and Speight’s took the opportunity to construct its Alehouse to reflect the strength and character of the building, indeed the West Coast. Enjoy a hearty meal in our restaurant with many dishes focused on the ample fish and game available on the west coast including, venison, wild pork and of course West Coast whitebait when in season. Each perfectly matched with your favouriteSpeight’s Ale.
