Living History Heritage Walking Tour

As part of the Museum Outreach Programme, long time Hokitika residents Brian Ward and David Verrall conduct guided history tours of central Hokitika.

Over a distance of 1.2 km, one of these two men, in the guise of a famous New Zealander, will be your guide through the historic areas of Hokitika, walking along the wharf where thousands of miners and migrants disembarked; stand in the very places where the original photos were taken, and we have a folio of A3 photos to demonstrate the difference that 150 years can make. Walk along Revell St, where there were once over 90 hotels, and in the course of your journey, have shared many of the wonderful stories about the town and its personalities.

Brian Ward dresses as Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann, a long-time GP of Hokitika who was Medical Superintendent, mountaineer, photographer and much more, whilst David Verrall dresses as Richard John Seddon, NZ's longest serving Prime Minister, Mayor of Kumara, and father of the Welfare State as we know it today.

Bookings are prefered with 24 hours notice, and cost $15pp for an hour, which includes free Museum entry.
Tours are available at 10.30 am or 2.30 pm, depending on availabilty of the guides.

Evening tours can be arranged for interested people which includes a personally guided tour of the Museum, usually in the summer time when the evenings are lighter, and these cost $35pp.
